Sphinx Art Productions organized the 3rd edition of Cinéma Arabe from in 4 Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven and Nijmegen) in April 2009 . About 35 (short) films from filmmakers from 15 different countries were presented in about 110 screenings in four cinemas. The films were selected because of their high artistic quality, the innovative view of its director and because it had not been presented before during a festival in The Netherlands.
Focus of Cinema Arabe 2009 were “identity” and “stability” as well as “sexuality” and “religion”. 10 filmmakers -of which 5 women- were invited to The Netherlands in order to present their films and contribute to Q & A’s and debates. In addition to the festival an educative program was set up to reach out to about 1000 pupils at 8 different schools in Amsterdam.
