The BlackStarBike is a fashionable bamboo bicycle. The bike is a result of a partnership between Ghanaian and Dutch entrepreneurs and the Columbia University in the City of New York. It was born out of the desire to produce a bamboo bicycle that would be more than just a gimmick.
The founders of BlackStarBikes drafted the following mission statement: ‘Ending Africa’s poverty means trade, not aid. That’s why we developed a bicycle which in terms of price, design and quality, can compete with today’s fashionable urban bicycles. The BlackStarBike is not only a business concept, it is also a statement. We want to give Africans the chance to process their own raw materials into consumer goods. By doing so, African labour force and African entrepreneurs are pulled up in the hierarchy of the supply chain where profits are bigger. On top of that, formal employment, with all its benefits, is created.’
